For more than a century, the Chicago Defender has been one of the nation’s most influential African American newspapers and a trusted voice in documenting, celebrating, and advancing Black achievement. Founded in 1905, the Defender has played a pivotal role in shaping history, elevating community leaders, and highlighting the stories that matter most to African Americans in Chicago and across the country.
Through its signature Women of Excellence and Men of Excellence programs, the Chicago Defender has honored more than 1,000 accomplished leaders, entrepreneurs, educators, public servants, advocates, and changemakers whose contributions have strengthened our communities and inspired future generations.
