This is the 33/34th Annual gathering of the Counseling and Treating People of Colour Conference: An International Perspective. Founded in 1987 by Dr. C. Vincent Bakeman and Dr. Frances L. Brisbane as a mechanism to connect people of colour engaged in working in the fields of Education, Health, Substance Use, HIV/AIDS, Mental Health, and Violence. (The conference expanded to include youth, college students and criminal justice). Further, the Founders, sought to create an environment of spirituality, harmony and respect where conference attendees and presenters can interact among themselves toward teaching and sharing knowledge and skills that are most appropriate to counsel and treat people of colour.

Bakeman and Brisbane envisioned a multi-ethnic gathering at which representatives from various cultures would share treatment and prevention philosophies and techniques effective within their own cultures. At the same time, participants would gain understanding of other cultural groups and how to serve people of colour across cultural lines. From the very first conference, says Brisbane, “we intended to make culture the lightning rod for all our discussions. We wanted to immerse the attendee in an environment and mindset where they not only heard about, but also experienced the many cultures around them.” Bakeman said they deliberately use the international spelling of Colour in the conference name to include all nonwhite cultural groups.

Over the years the conference was held in over 14 locations around the world and drew often over 400 multicultural attendees before the COVID 19 pandemic. The conference has attracted high caliber keynote speakers and leading experts and practitioners in the fields as well as drew in important experience of people working on the front lines who have insights and much to share. Because of the unique make-up of the attendees and the cross-cultural interactions conference participants learn as much between
sessions as in the sessions.
