Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is a historic fraternity that was founded on December 4, 1906, at Cornell University. The fraternity has a long history of promoting social justice, civil rights, and political empowerment, and is often involved in community service activities.
Xi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. is an alumni chapter that was installed on May 15, 1924 in Chicago. Xi Lambda continues its historic role of providing leadership in Chicago and holding true to its pledge of service to our community. Xi Lambda has old traditions that bind the brotherhood to excellence in all that the chapter endeavors. Some of the notable brothers that have served Alpha in Xi Lambda are Jesse Owens, Edward Franklin Frazier, John Hope Franklin, Claude A. Barnett, Sydney P. Jones, Henry Arthur Callis, John H. Stroger and many more.
A Voteless People is a Hopeless People is a program initiated by the fraternity that aims to promote voter registration and civic engagement among the community. The program was first launched in the 1930s, during a time when African Americans faced systemic barriers to voting, and it continues to be a relevant and important initiative today. Voter education and registration have remained a dominant focus of this outreach activity for over 65 years. In the 1990’s, the focus shifted to include political awareness and empowerment, delivered most frequently through town meetings and candidate forums.
