Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago has worked with financial institutions, foundations, government agencies and community residents to remove the barriers that keep low-income and working-class families and neighborhoods of color from achieving the American dream of homeownership and thriving communities.
Our teams work to stabilize, revitalize and empower low and moderate-income Black and Brown communities throughout the greater Chicagoland area and suburbs through neighborhood programming, resident leadership development, mortgage lending, real estate development, homeownership and financial education and counseling, and policy advocacy. NHS believes homeownership is central to building generational wealth and prosperous communities.
NHS hosts its Annual Awards each March, and this year, we have reached a milestone of 50 years of service in the community. Awards are given to local, regional, and national leaders who exemplify leadership, innovation, and passion in making our communities better places to live and work, ensuring everyone has access to the tools needed to build wealth and strengthen their families and neighborhoods.
Our event draws guests from across the agency’s vast public, private, and community partnerships and raises vital funds to support our mission of expanding homeownership opportunities in low- and moderate-income neighborhoods while revitalizing Chicago and the south suburbs. All proceeds help working-class families access affordable housing, improve their lives, and strengthen their communities.
Our Annual Awards will celebrate the work and accomplishments of NHS in the past year, focus on the continuing work of identifying and dismantling the systemic barriers to equal access to the wealth-building opportunities of homeownership for communities of color, and challenge our partners and others to provide robust support for this mission in the coming year.

Since 1975, NHS has recognized the impact of race, income and social status on a person’s housing security. We know homeownership has a foundational role to play in community development and closing the racial wealth gap. Our teams work to stabilize and revitalize low and moderate-income communities throughout the greater Chicagoland area and suburbs. We facilitate such revitalization by helping middle-class and working-class families purchase and maintain their own homes. NHS works to correct the inequities and end the exploitative practices that create housing insecurity. Well-maintained, owner-occupied homes have a range of economic, social, and psychological benefits for their residents and are critical components of stable and economically healthy neighborhoods.
