We Wear the Mask by Dunbar is an invitation for us all to consider the “masks” we introduce to ourselves and our lives. These masks not only can be counter productive to our own development, but also can undermine the work that we have been purposed to do. Ask yourself, how can you be “ an extraordinary man doing extraordinary things” when you mask your ability to show up in a world that needs authenticity? How can we be a collective of Black genius when we shroud our greatness or, forget to provide others with help to actualize their own greatness?
The 2020 Alumni Weekend for the Institute for Responsible Citizenship challenges alumni and current scholars to consider the following:
What masks do I wear?
What masks do I attribute to others based on my own perceptions?
What masks am I willing to confront?
What new meaning am I willing to create for myself, my community, my Institute family?
This theme is not meant to provide an answer, rather; it is meant to form a space for you as an alumnus to show up and grapple with the institutional challenges we face in our revolutionary act of being talented, Black, male (or whatever your preferred identifiers are) and exceptional. We welcome you to decide what “we wear…”
