About the Event

Hi Family! Summer is flying by and we want to make sure that you spend as much time outdoors in the sunshine as possible!  Come join a Hike + Grill and Chill! We will start the morning with 2.5 mile morning hike and then some much needed fun and relaxation. Carved into the rock by the flow of the Black River, the shut-ins are a great place for swimming and splashing.  Johnson’s Shut Ins also offer picnic spaces for grilling. Come join us for some fun BPWH style!

PLEASE READ IN ORDER TO KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT AND WHAT TO BRING

Meet up:  We meet up at 8:00am at Macys parking lot at the South County Mall.  The address is 10 S County Center Way, St. Louis 63129. The bus leaves at 8:15am. If you decide to drive your personal vehicle please arrive to Johnson’s Shut-Ins no later than 10:00AM. 

Park Location: Johnson’s Shut Ins State Park. The bus will arrive at 10am. If you want to drive yourself please arrive at this time. Approximately 1 hour and 43 minutes from downtown St. Louis.

Transportation: Free transportation is provided via a bus. Please arrive by 8am To check in.

What to expect: we will start the morning with a short 2.5 hike followed by bbq’n and hanging out riverside. 

The Hike: We will be hiking Johnson Shutins State Park Trail which is a scenic 2.5 mile trail with 285 ft elevation gain and includes Boulder and river views. 

The Water: Johnson Shutins is a great place to cool off along a calm river front. Be prepared to get in the water or at the very least get your feet wet while we grill and chill! 

Grill and Chill: BPWH will provide food and refreshments. You are more than welcome to bring your own grill, cooler with cold drinks, and food.

Timeline: 

  • 8:00AM Bus arrives at  at Macy’s parking lot located: 10 S County Center Way,  St. Louis 63129.
  • 8:15AM depart at Macy’s
  • 10:00AM Arrive @ Johnson’s Shut-Ins
  • 10:30AM Intros then  hike
  • 12:00PM  GRILL + CHILL + SWIM
  • 3:00PM Depart Park
  • 4:30PM Drop off participants at their vehicles.

Registration: All attendees are required to register. All hikes are complimentary, but donations are encouraged.

What to wear/pack: water, breathable athletic clothes , a jacket, a backpack to hold all of your belongings, hiking boots or shoes with good traction -NO VANS, a hat, a mask, Rain jacket or emergency poncho, Your favorite plant-based snack: fresh fruit, nuts, granola bars etc. Waterproof shoes/boots recommended. This location offers swimming so please pack your bathing suit, towel, sunscreen, and water shoes or old sneakers you don’t mind getting wet. Life jackets are available upon request at the park. 

What Should Be In Your Hiking Backpack:

  • Weather-appropriate clothing (think moisture-wicking and layers
  • Trail Snacks (light foods such as fruit and granola bars. Heavy foods will weigh you down and make it harder for you to complete the hike.)
  • Plenty of water
  • First-aid kit (our hike leaders have first aid kits on deck but it may be beneficial for you to have your own.)
  • Knife or multi-tool
  • Toilet paper ( plastic zip bag  to discard of waste. We do not litter on the trails)
  • swim clothes and a change of dry clothes 

 

Waivers: Everyone must sign a waiver. If you have not already signed BOTH our Covid Waiver and Liability Waiver please do so before arriving to help speed up the checkin process. Level of Expertise: This is a moderate hike however proper shoes are highly recommended. There are some areas that we will be hiking with slippery rock and shoes with good traction and ankle support are needed. No flat shoes such as vans.

Social Distancing: *All participants must register. Walk ups will not be allowed.  Space is very limited to ensure social distancing measures and masks are required. All participants will be required to sign COVID waivers

Weather: This event is RAIN OR SHINE. The weather in Lesterville, MO is predicted to be 85 degrees and partly cloudy. Although rain is not predicted please come prepared for the chance of rain. Bring a rain jacket or poncho, water proof boots or shoes that you don’t mind getting wet, and an extra pair of clothes and shoes to change into afterwards.

We meet up twice a month on Sunday mornings at different locations within the St. Louis area. Current Sunday Funday activities have included hiking, rock climbing, kayaking and hot yoga! Future Sunday Funday actives include bicycling, skiing and zip lining. We have new people that join each week who are new to these various activities and we welcome that!
